CBI Begins Probe into Illegal Constructions in Kolkata After Calcutta High Court Order

 

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has begun a preliminary inquiry into allegations of widespread illegal construction in Kolkata following directions from the Calcutta High Court. The agency has already carried out searches at several locations as part of the investigation.

The High Court, while hearing a public interest litigation, had questioned the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) over its alleged failure to take effective action against unauthorised buildings. The court directed the CBI on September 11 to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the allegations.

According to reports, the KMC had identified 42 unauthorised constructions, while allegations before the court referred to more than 50 such structures across areas including Beliaghata, Maniktala, Rajabazar and Canal East Road.

CBI teams have visited and searched locations including Rajabazar, Keshav Chandra Sen Street, Narkeldanga, Amherst Street, Tangra, Maniktala and Beleghata. Officials have also spoken to residents and examined information relating to the identified properties.

The case involves allegations that large amounts of money may have been invested in the construction and sale of unauthorised properties. The petition also raised allegations concerning unaccounted funds and possible money laundering. These remain allegations and are subject to investigation.

The High Court has asked the CBI to submit its preliminary inquiry report on October 14, 2026. The agency may also consider forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) if required during the course of the inquiry.

The investigation could bring greater scrutiny to building approvals, ownership records, financial transactions and the role of authorities in connection with the alleged unauthorised constructions.
